Carbon intensity of energy system
This indicator tracks Europe’s progress in reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering the carbon footprint of its energy system. In 2023, fossil fuels accounted for 70.6% of energy use, down from 83.7% in 1990, and carbon intensity has fallen since 2016. While many countries achieved significant reductions in emissions, some saw small increases, and overall efforts will need to triple to meet the EU’s climate goals.
